2022 - 22nd October - blackouts!

They start from three outages lasting three hours each, kept as close together as possible so as to minimise disruption.

The second level doubles the number of weekly outages, bringing the total time without power to 18 hours.

There are a total of 18 levels peaking at a total week-long blackout, though engineers say it’s ‘unlikely’ they will even need to activate Level 1.

Charts have been published as part of the government’s emergency code

Properties have been classed with a letter from A to U which determines when they will lose power in each level of the disconnection plan.

In an effort to avoid the chaos of 1970s, when entire neighbourhoods took turns losing power, the UK’s modern power grid allows for outages to be spread evenly throughout the country.

The letter denotes ‘load blocks’ linking each property to the grid, which would be disconnected individually.

You can generally check which letter your property falls under on your energy bill, though some suppliers don’t include the information on correspondence.
