2025 - sunday 16th March...

last night bedtime was 12.22am and slept through till 7.00am, so must have been really tired...

anyway I wrote this blog post on the 18th February...a month ago

http://solstice-days.blogspot.com/2025/02/2025-18th-february-todays-humming.html

and noticed today that the hot tap on the bathroom sink is dripping worse than what is was a month ago...

yesterday bled the radiator in the main bedroom and a load of air came out so then I topped up the pressure on the boiler to over 1.0 bar and omg what a whooshing noise in the pipe so I'm hoping that is all that is wrong, just air trapped in the system and an easy fix...

but later when the hot tap was turned on the bathroom and the central heating came on there was gurgling and a clunking noise so had to turn the stop tap back by a quarter turn which seems to have stopped the clunking noise but now when you flush the toilet there isn't enough pressure to wash your hands!

so two months later, has there been a problem with the washer not seated properly on the hot tap on the bathroom sink all along which has caused all this...

later this week our usual boiler man is coming to hopefully work out what the humming/vibrating noise  is...

typically caused by

  • worn pump bearings,
  • vibrating fan bearings
  • or a defective burner

A loud, vibrating noise from your boiler can be a sign of a serious problem and potentially dangerousso it's best to have it checked by a professional heating engineer as soon as possible.

Here's a breakdown of why a loud, vibrating noise might be a concern:

Potential Causes and Dangers:
  • Limescale buildup: Hard water can cause mineral deposits to accumulate inside the boiler, leading to overheating, rattling, and potentially damaging the heat exchanger.
  • Overheating: -
  • If the boiler is overheating, it can cause vibrations and loud noises, potentially leading to damage or even a fire hazard.
  • Faulty pump or thermostat can cause the boiler to operate improperly, leading to unusual noises and vibrations.
  • Trapped air or blockages: - Air trapped in the system or a blocked flue can cause banging, whistling, or vibrating noises.
  • Cracked heat exchanger - this can lead to leaks and the release of dangerous gases like carbon monoxide.
  • Loose components: - Loose brackets or parts can cause vibrations and loud noises, potentially leading to further damage.
  • Dirty burners: - can cause ignition problems and loud noises, potentially leading to gas leaks or explosions.
  • High water pressure can cause pipes and boiler components to vibrate excessively, potentially leading to leaks or damage.
  • A faulty gas valve  can cause a variety of problems, including loud noises, and can lead to gas leaks or explosions.
  • Leaks: - even small ones, can be a sign of a larger problem and should be addressed promptly.

    • Don't ignore the noise: - If you hear a loud, vibrating noise from your boiler, don't ignore it.
    • erm it's a bit difficult to ignore thanks AI duh!
